And a great deal of cologne and perfume as well. Rob Cunningham: Yeah, absolutely! Those are the old days for sure. It must seem like so long ago now - it was 25 years ago! This gives a good sense of the scale, but it's so hard to communicate it until you're in that 3D playing space yourself, panning around.Įurogamer: I was watching a big interview series Ars Technica did with you a while back, and in it you were talking about the old days and the foundation of Relic, and Homeworld 1. So if the rest of the game can match this quality, and I've only seen what is one hour of a probable many, remember, then we're in for a treat. And I got all this from a remote demo via Parsec, so my inputs were inherently delayed and the image compressed, meaning I wasn't getting the full sharpness of detail or the full hit of ray tracing - and given the dramatic contrast light and dark have in space, I'm particularly excited about this. It is the experience you remember but improved and evolved. This is what I mean when I say "Homeworld is back". And then you can zoom right back out to look at your entire fleet - even your mothership - like pin pricks against the wreck. But now, with the interactive scenery, you can zoom right into colossal wrecks as well, into destroyed cross-sections the size of skyscrapers, and see person-sized detail there: murals sprayed onto walls, twisted girders etc. It was always thrilling in Homeworld when you could zoom close to the mothership and watch your created craft coming from it, or follow a resourcer going about its work. It's even more apparent for the improved detail and technical capabilities we have now. The whole feeling is one of reverence for this most beguiling and appealing place.Īnd that is all here, in Homeworld 3, in abundance. It's the way your pilots talk to you, never raising their voices, as if they were in a museum and scared to disturb the silence. It's in the way your craft paint the darkness with exhaust trails like little brushes across a canvas. You feel it in the cinematic beginnings of campaigns in the original games, when the camera swoops around your mothership, careful to catch planets artistically in the background, and the feeling of infinite massiveness and silence around you. I think that's what makes it special and stands it apart. It might sound silly but Homeworld has always been a series in love with the majesty of space, with the romance of it. Doesn't quite capture the sense of playing it, but almost. Watch on YouTube This is a nice broad sweep of the kinds of scenarios Homeworld 3 will put you in. And what really comes through for me is space. It's as though the faff of the old games has been tidied away - but not sacrificed - to enable the exciting parts of the formula to come through. And it's fun.Īnd those two words "it's fun" are crucial to what Homeworld 3 is about. They are not dumb: they won't fly into walls and scenery if you leave them unattended. They will make trench-runs on their own with only a simple instruction - trench-runs! They'll fly through huge engine shafts of colossal wrecks on their own - peekaboo! They'll even use nearby cover automatically while preparing for another attack run. No fussy controls govern it your cursor shows how ships will interact with a piece of scenery and then they do. I'm over here - no not really, I'm over here! And I've played Homeworld 3 for about an hour and the idea really works. They can handle this big idea of using space wreckage as cover to hide behind, fly through, sneak around - use it like a theatrical set you can play tricks on your opponents with.
